LET THE PEOPLE ELECT THE PRESIDENT
ABOLISH THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE

Your vote for President does not count!  It is meaningless in the context of the United States
Constitution.

Instead, the 538 members of the Electoral College select the President of the United States.
These 538 citizens are not chosen by the voters, but by the political parties.  These electors
are then free to vote for whomever they want regardless of any pledge they have made.

In 2000, the Electoral College selected George Bush as President despite his loss of the
election to Al Gore by 540,520 votes. This was the fourth time in our nation's history that the
Electoral College frustrated the will of the people and selected a president who lost the
popular vote.

Like many  presidential elections, the 2004 election fell prey to the politics of the Electoral
College.  Because of the need to win 270 electoral votes, the candidates concentrated on
some hot button  issues in a few states that could have been won by either side.  The rest of
the nation was ignored and significant national issues were trumped by an anti-gay marriage
morality play in Ohio.

This site addresses how the Electoral College subverts the will of the majority of the people,
disenfranchises millions of voters, reduces voter turnout, gives voters greater rights in some
states and holds the majority of voters hostage to the views of the minority.

As Americans,  we must work together to change this outdated aspect of the Constitution to
allow the People of the United States to elect their President.  The direct election of the
President by popular vote is the only way to ensure that each American's vote is counted and
counted fairly!
If you live in California, New York, or Texas, your vote for a
President Elector counts about five times less than a voter in
Wyoming.  Is this fair?
If you live in Delaware, your vote for President Elector counts
more than your neighbors in Pennsylvania or New Jersey.
If you think every vote for President  should be counted equally
no matter where you live, call your members of Congress now!
CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND SENATORS

If you want the president to be elected by the people, the Constitution must be amended.
Congress can start the process but they will not do anything until Americans in large numbers
demand to have each and every vote count equally in the presidential election. Write, call, or
email your
Representative or Senators regularly to tell them that: you want the right to have
your vote count in the presidential election; the Electoral College should be eliminated; and that
direct election by the people is the only way to ensure that every American's vote is counted
equally.

CONTACT YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVES

Under the Constitution, the state legislatures can initiate the Constitutional Amendment
process. Contact your
state representatives and deliver the same message that you delivered to
Congress.

IF YOU ARE A DEMOCRAT

Write, call, or email the Democratic National Committee in Washington,DC. Identify yourself
a as democrat and tell them how upset you are about how the Republicans keep proposing
amendments that do not belong in the Constitution. Let them know that you think that the
Democrats should be the party to expand democracy by extending the right to vote directly for
the president. Insist that the National Party adopt a position that calls for a Constitutional
Amendment to eliminate the Electoral College and replace it with the direct election of the
president by the people.
